Welcome to This Hands-On Workshop!

It's gonna be pretty hands-on (or paws-on).
Here are your tasks for today:
  1. Check out as much of this website as possible in the first 15 minutes, clicking through any online presentations, leaving comments, and visiting links to actual learner samples. If you get bored or have to wait at any time, there's a page on Things to Do While Waiting for Help on the green bar up top.
  2. Create your own blog through Blogger.com. Then submit your blog address (the URL should go something like <blogname>.blogspot.com) to the presenter via the Feedback Form (in the right column).
  3. Check out the Sample Portfolio Tasks Page by clicking on its link on the green navigation bar above or directly on this link.
    1. Try out a couple of random tasks from Levels 4 through 7. The words in bold are from the CLB2012 document; the non-bold instructions that follow are the presenter's.
    2. Copy the Level 2 Speaking task to a new post on your blog, and provide additional instructions, e.g. to record the answer on Vocaroo.com and then to post or embed it on the learner's blog.
    3. Copy the Level 8 Speaking task to a new post of yours, and provide instructions to enact the conversation with a partner. If Vocaroo does not keep its recording for more than a few months, which is actually the case, what alternatives are there? Feel free to brainstorm with a partner.
    4. Copy the Level 8 Writing task to yet another new post, and embed an audio or video lecture in your post. Possible sources include TED talks (e.g. embedded video below) and brief (< 10 minutes) Youtube instructionals. Provide specific instructions for learners' response.
  4. And, finally, we've been told, please complete this survey for TESL Toronto. Thanks for attending!

  5. On your blog dashboard, locate the Layout page and Add a Gadget. Select Blog List, and christen it Your Classmates' Portfolios. Introduce yourself to at least three classmates and Add to List their blog addresses. Save and View Blog! Don't forget to leave comments and compliments on each other's portfolios!
  6. Select one of your classmates' blogs and do the portfolio tasks listed there, publishing the results on your own blog. How did that turn out, eh? Leave them a comment!
  7. Honk, hoot, or hoof it out the door to celebrate.
